Rafael Nadal suffered a heartbreaking exit in the first round of the French Open, losing to Alexander
Zverev. Known as the ‘King of Clay’ with a remarkable record at Roland Garros, Nadal was defeated
in a one-sided clash. Despite turning 38 next week, Nadal showcased his trademark fighting spirit but
could only convert two of 11 break points against an inspired Zverev.
This loss marks only the fourth time Nadal has been beaten in 116 matches at Roland Garros. It was
also only his fifth tournament since January 2023, following a hip injury and muscle tear.
Among the spectators were several tennis stars, including Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Iga
Swiatek, who came to witness Nadal’s performance. There has been speculation that the 2024
French Open could be the 14-time champion’s farewell to the Grand Slam, although Nadal has not
confirmed this.
When asked about the presence of Djokovic, Alcaraz, and other tennis stars in the stands, Nadal
responded, “I didn’t see them, but I think in some way it’s normal. If it’s the last time I’m playing
here, and if I knew that Novak was playing for the last time at Wimbledon or in Australia, I would be
there. These rivals or young players like Carlos, who have probably watched me on TV most of their
lives, it’s natural for them to be interested, especially here with all the history I have.”
Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam winner, suggested that their presence indicated he has left a positive
legacy in the sport. “I’m happy that it happens because it means I had a positive legacy here and for
my career. And that’s it,” he added.
